Wells Festival of Literature was set up by a committee of volunteers in 1992. The first festival ran for a weekend and has grown ever since, expanding to a week in 2002 and now operating over nine days every October. In 2021, the festival will take place between 15-23 October, and tickets will go on sale in August. Our main objective is to promote enjoyment of and excitement about books and to encourage a love of the written word by bringing a wide range of international, national and local writers to Wells to entertain, challenge, inspire and inform audiences of all ages and tastes.
The festival also runs an active education programme which works closely with local schools to help develop a love of literature from an early age. We are committed supporters of the literacy charity Coram Beanstalk, and we organise writing competitions which have attracted entries from all over the world.
Our competitions open on 1st April 2021, and close at midnight on 30th June 2021, prizes will be presented at the festival on 18th October. There are four categories: Open Poetry, Short Story, Book for Children and Young Poets – please see our website for further details!
